The DuroMax XP10000EH Dual Fuel Generator Review

The DuroMax XP10000EH Generator – Instant Power

The DuroMax XP10000EH is one of the best generators on the market today.  When you have a power outage, it’s nice to know that you have a highly reliable piece of equipment like this to make sure you can still function somewhat normally.  At least, the contents of your refrigerator and freezer won’t spoil.

This is a great little unit to take along in your recreational vehicle for backup power, too – whether you are camping or touring.

I like the fact that this dual fuel model can be operated using either regular, unleaded gasoline or clean burning liquid propane.

Here’s A Tip…PRI-G Fuel Stabilizer

Always add a quality fuel stabilizer to gasoline.  Without it, gasoline will start to go bad in a month or so – and start gumming up the carburetor.  But, this 32 ounce bottle of PRI-G Fuel Stabilizer will keep the gas fresh for years to come while improving the combustion process.  One bottle of this juice will treat up to 512 gallons of petrol.

The 18 horsepower, 439cc engine provides 10kW of surge (starting) power and 8kW of running (rated) power.  It has an electric start – but, it can also be started by recoil, too.

Run time – at 50% output – with an 8 gallon tank full of gasoline – is 8 hours.  A 40 pound tank of propane will run about 9 hours at 50% output.

More Tips

The DuroMax XP10000EH needs to be grounded to an external source. Check out the user manual and Generator Grounding for parts and advice.

Astor Propane Tank Pressure Gauge

Having a gauge on the propane tank like the pressure gauge marketed by Astor, is a big help to keep track of the propane level. It’s nice to know when the LPG is getting low so you can be ready to swap out the tanks or switch over to gasoline.

With the right parts, this DuroMax 10kW generator can plug directly into the household breaker box. You’ll still want to have a certified electrician do the hookups but, here are the basic parts you’ll need for a safe and solid connection:

Conntek 15 foot Power Cord with Inlet Box – This is the outside 50 amp connection cord with electrical box that attaches the generator to the house.

Reliance Controls Corporation THP108 PowerBACK! Mains Return Alarm – This helpful gadget will alert you when the power outage is over and the main power is back on so you can unplug the generator.

Eaton Generator Interlock Kit 100A-125A BRMIKBR Type BR – This is a failsafe device that prevents the main power switch from being turned on while the generator is hooked up to the house.

DuroMax XP10000EH Instrument Panel

The generator’s fully loaded instrument panel includes:

  • Oil warning light
  • Volt meter
  • Circuit Breaker
  • RV switch
  • Idle control
  • Electric start with key
  • Engine shutoff switch
  • Power outlets – 120 Volts AC 30 Amps (1), 120 Volts AC 20 Amps (2), 120/240 Volts AC 50 Amps (1), 120/240 Volts AC 30 Amps (1) – plus one 12 Volts DC outlet for charging batteries.

A 12 volt battery, a wheel kit with solid fill tires, and a tool kit are included with the DuroMax 10kW generator as well.

The residential limited warranty is 3 years.

A Few Quotes From Happy Owners

DuroMax XP10000EH

“This is a well built machine with nice features.  The only thing is I wish it also had is an hour meter.”

“Very compact and I love the fact that it is dual fuel!”

“Great generator, great company, and great people.”

“It ran my central air conditioner, my well pump, and more.  I’m very satisfied.  I’m ready for any power outages!”

“This thing is a beast and runs great on propane.”

“Much quieter than I expected.”

“Super easy set up and assembly.  Directions are very detailed on how to run the different fuel types.  I actually ran this generator for 40 straight hours on one 100 pound tank of propane!”

“The generator works great.  No problems setting it up and running it.  I did have a slight problem that it would shut down right after I started it.  But, then I saw that I hadn’t put in enough oil.  Once I brought up the oil level, it ran like a champ without shutting down.”

“Runs great!  I just wish I could also run my computer on it.  But, the sine wave is not clean and I don’t want to damage my computer.  But, otherwise, DuroMax made me a happy person.”

“I bought this 10kW generator to use for power outages which has been pretty common of late.  I also tried running my power saw and a large air compressor and no problems.  I’ve read people complaining about the noise it makes but, considering the size of the motor, it didn’t seem so loud to me.”

“I can power 90% of my 2,500 square foot house with this generator.”

This generator doesn’t have a pure sine wave.  Thus, sensitive electronics like computers, laptops, televisions, etc., could very well be damaged.  However, with a few added components, you can still use your favorite electronic gadgets.  Now, isn’t that a relief?

    Hello Jim,

I never thought much about purchasing a generator for my home as a possible option. I always thought this idea was for big companies and major public events. I really never thought that I could get such a compact generator for my house.

But, after seeing this DuroMax generator, I will definitely check it out.  One of these days, either my friends or I will need a backup generator to host our own events or keep our power on when the main electricity gets turned off.

    Great Review, very informative.

You really answered a lot of questions.

So far as I see from your review this might be the best generator to purchase. Full 20 lb propane tank should run about 32 hours Idle.

My plan was to get a 100 lb propane tank, I don’t plan on ever running gasoline through it.

I’m glad to know that I have to ground the generator using a ground rod while it is powered on through the transfer switch.

Good luck and thanks again for a great review.

    Have a nice day,

      Hi Leo,

The DuroMax XP10000EH is one of the best generators in the dual fuel line.  Head on over to the Generator Reviews and you can find a bunch more great generator buys, too!

A couple of things to remember:

If you use propane, your running (rated) watts drop to 6.8kW and your surge (starting) watts go down to 8kW.

Propane run time for this generator, at 50% load, is 5 hours on 5 gallons – an hour per gallon – so, you’re better off to use a 100 lb propane tank – or larger.

NOTE:  4.24 pounds of propane equals 1 gallon of propane – thus, at 50% load, you can run the generator for 23.6 hours on a 100 lb propane tank.

Adding a transfer switch can get pretty expensive – and, it’s a set up that only a certified electrician should attempt.  Even with a certified electrician, you can save a few hundred dollars by putting in an interlock system instead.
