Freeze Drying Doughnuts

Freeze Drying Doughnuts – Who’d A Thunk It Would Be Good Idea?

Never – in my wildest dreams – would I have ever entertained the notion that freeze drying doughnuts was a viable idea.

Krispy Kreme Glazed Doughnuts

A lucious looking glazed doughnut!

But, recently, Krispy Kreme had a birthday – and, they were offering a “buy 1 dozen – get 1 dozen free” deal to celebrate.  The offer was limited to one-deal-per-customer-per-day.  So, my wife and I were able to pick up 4 dozen Krispy Kreme Glazed Doughnuts – on July 17, 2020 – the day that Krispy Kreme turned 83!

Their glazed doughnuts are at the very top of my list of all time favorite sweets!  Add in a tall glass of ice cold milk – and I’m most definitely in heaven!

Ice cold milk to go with my glazed doughnuts!

The response to their “birthday celebration deal” was so massive that Krispy Kreme decided to extend the deal an extra 2 days!

So, since our local Krispy Kreme establishment is nearby, we dropped by to pick up another 4 dozen glazed doughnuts – on both days of the extended B1G1 deal.

That brought our supply of Krispy Kreme Glazed Doughnuts up to a grand total of 12 dozen!!!  That’s 144 glazed doughnuts that needed to be eaten or preserved very quickly – since they are highly perishable – with a very short shelf life.

What to do?  What to do?

Enter – My Harvest Right Home Freeze Dryer

Whatever doughnuts we couldn’t eat over the next 4 or 5 days were immediately frozen – which amounted to the bulk of our doughnut stash.

Then, I fired up my Harvest Right Freeze Dryer – and moved my frozen Krispy Kreme Glazed Doughnuts from the freezer to the freeze dryer – 2 dozen at a time – 6 doughnuts cut into small sections – on each of the 4 trays.

Sliced up doughnuts ready to be freeze dried.

NOTE:  I used Harvest Right Sillicone Mats on the trays to keep the doughnuts from sticking.  These mats work wonders – avoiding messy cleanups – and they clean up well just by sticking them on the top shelf of my dishwasher!

The freeze drying process to only about 20 hours per load – so, in less than a week, I was able to completely freeze dry every last one of the doughnuts that couldn’t be readily consumed in the near term.

Using Mason jars, oxygen absorbers, and a Foodsaver Vacuum Sealing System (along with a Mason jar attachment), I vacuum packed everything and put them on the shelves for future snacking.

How Do My Freeze Dried Doughnuts Taste?

I gotta tell ya – these doughnuts still have exactly the same flavor as fresh Krispy Kreme Glazed Doughnuts “hot off the belt!”  They even look exactly the same!

The only difference is that they are now crunchy, bit-sized snacks – and I am pleasantly surprised – and amazed – at how easy it was for them to retain their original flavor throughout the freeze drying procedure.  And, they are good for 25 years – two-and-a-half decades!  That’s a long, long time!

I highly recommend using the Harvest Right Home Freeze Dryer for preserving Krispy Kreme Glazed Doughnuts.  Here’s hoping that once you buy this home freeze dryer, you’ll give this a try!

It does not work well to freeze dry filled or iced doughnuts.

NOTE:  I do not recommend freeze drying any cream or jelly filled doughnuts – or, doughnuts that have icing on top.  The filling will run out of the innards – and, the icing will melt off the top.  Trust me – I’ve tried it – and experienced disastrous circumstances.
