Patriot Products CSV 3100B Gas Powered Chipper Shredder Review

The Patriot Products CSV 3100B Is A Top-Notch, High-Powered Piece of Equipment

The only thing better than having a Patriot Products CSV 2515 Electric Chipper Shredder is owning a Patriot Products CSV 3100B Gas Powered Chipper Shredder.

This is a heavy-duty, commercial-grade machine that will chop even the toughest yard materials into small pieces.

Nails - Glass - Barbed Wire - don't belong in a chipper shredder

Just don’t try chipping railroad spikes, nails, glass, rocks, bricks, barbed wire, or gardening tools – that isn’t what it is designed for.  Just kidding – because we all know better than to do that, don’t we?  Of course, I did it – but only by accident!Patriot Products CSV-3100B Gas Powered Chipper Shredder

“How did that get in there?”

This baby boasts a 10 HP, 305cc Briggs and Stratton Vanguard OHV engine with a noise reducing muffler and a “low oil” sensor.  The horsepower rating is higher than most chipper shredders and, it makes it easier to keep the equipment from bogging down during use.

I dearly love Briggs and Stratton engines.  If you follow the starting instructions, use fresh gas, and the right type and amount of oil – they will virtually always start on the first or second pull of the cord.

The chipper cone can gobble a tree limb up to 3 inches in diameter – obliterating it almost as fast as gravity permits.

The knives and Y-hammers used for chipping and shredding create a vacuum that draw the yard waste into the machine quickly and efficiently – making it nearly effortless to chip tree branches and shred leaves, pine straw, bamboo, bush trimmings, corn stalks, sunflower stalks, and other yard rubbish – producing the best mulch and compost.

There are 2 cutting knives that chip branches placed into the cone and 6 Y-hammers for shredding yard waste placed into the top hopper.  When the knives and hammers are sharp, the vacuum is strong – and, clippings are easily pulled into the cone and the hopper.  When they start getting dull, you will find yourself, over time, pushing material into the machine more and more often.  Before buying replacement knives, use a good Dremel tool to lightly put a nice, crisp 30o edge on the cutting lips.  You can sharpen them many times before you need to order new ones.  If the Y-hammers get too dull, the only remedy is to buy new ones.

The CSV 3100B has a direct drive system.  That means you won’t be replacing any belts or adjusting pulleys.triot Wood Chipper Tow Bar

This machine weighs in at around 180 pounds but, the large wheels make it a snap to pull around on a level yard or slightly hilly areas.  For navigating steeper hills, there is an optional Patriot Wood Chipper Tow Bar that you can use to hook the CSV 3100B up to your garden tractor – making transport fatigue-free.

Patriot Products Chipper Buddy – is a handy tool – designed to make clearing debris from the shredder hopper a trouble-free task.

Patriot Products Jumbo Collection Bag – is 2 times the size of the standard collection bag that is included with the CSV 3100B so you can chip twice as much – before having to empty the bag.

Patriot Products Gator Grabber – with its gator teeth and extendable handles takes all the work out of picking up piles of leaves and stuffing them into the hopper.  No more sore backs from constantly bending over to gather yard waste by hand.  The strength of this tool is amazing!  Its jaws can securely hold and pick up even heavy logs!

Input From CSV 3100B Owners

Briars and vines can clog up the machine.  This type of yard waste is very fibrous and becomes a soggy, clumped up mess – clogging up any chipper shredder.  It’s much better to burn vines, as well as any weeds – to prevent their seeds from spreading back into your garden or yard.

The throat on the hopper is too narrow.  There is a reason for this.  The narrow hopper limits the amount of material placed into it – decreasing the ability to jam up the Y-hammers.  Also, it is harder for someone to forget what they are doing and end up sticking their hand down into the hopper.  Keep a stick handy to push material down into the hopper – or, better yet, get the Patriot Products Chipper Buddy to do the job.  It’s great to give someone a hand – just don’t give that hand to this machine!

    Hey Jim,

thanks for your elaborate review. The shredder you’ve reviewed here looks really promising. The videos are impressive, even though I was a bit “disappointed” that the guy in the video used a bag to collect the chips 😀 I was hoping for this chips-flying-through-the-air effect 🙂 I also like your Pro-Tip to use a Dremel to sharpen the knives. I really appreciate it when people repair their stuff instead of throwing everything away!

All the best and thanks again.

      Hi Chris,

I’m glad you liked the review for the CSV-3100B – I researched this product extensively to determine its viability for kindred home gardeners.

If you buy any of the wood chipper shredders I have reviewed, you can make a video showing the chips flying through the air – and, I’ll add it to the review page!
